Bashiyra – ‘Surname’ (Review)

Author: No Comments Share:

Producer, singer-songwriter, and vocalist Bashiyra began her career delivering backing vocals for big-hitters such as Michael Bolton, Patti Labelle, and Diana Ross. She has worked with esteemed songwriters such as Crystal Johnson (Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Hamilton and Angie Stone) and Richard Rudolph (Minnie Riperton).

Her latest single ‘Surname’ is a sensual neo-soul midtempo. Bashiyra explains:

‘The inspiration behind SURNAME comes from intense exchanges of relationship desires. Desires that are unrequited between a woman loving a man who isn’t  emotionally available to her and the heartbreak that ensues as she is left to pick up the pieces of her broken heart. Pieces that a new lover helps her to recover. An emotional rebuild of self, mirrored within a loving and healthy relationship and marriage. A rebuild of self which sees the past lover attempt to renter into the heart of the woman he broke. A heart that now firmly belongs to her husband. DNA exchanged and a whole new SURNAME!

Delivering a passionate vocal performance, Bashiyra spurns a former romantic flame – ‘I won’t even think about what you’re proposing’ – and states her steadfast commitment to her man. The subtle and sensitive guitar work complements the R&B cadences, infusing the piece with a sultry energy.
