French Caribbean singer-songwriter and bassist Adi Oasis (formerly Adeline) has several soulful, groove-laden earworms to her name. This writer’s favourite is probably “Whisper My Name” (from her eponymous album), closely followed by “Mystic Lover” and “Twilight“. (Her live and fully orchestrated performance of the latter at the London Jazz Festival a couple of years back remains an evergreen delight.)
The lyrics of her latest tune “Multiply” – “My ovaries, calling calling / It’s destiny you’re just in time / Don’t blame it on me… You make me wanna multiply” – may raise eyebrows on paper. But they work wrapped up in the song’s funky pocket and delivered by Adi, whose voice (with shades of Badu here) is one of the strongest in contemporary soul.
