For those in London over the festive period, you must pop by the Jazz Cafe on 29th December. A staunch champion of soul music within London’s live music scene, the Jazz Cafe will be hosting the exceptional Black Voices this Christmas.
The House That Soul Built reviewed Black Voices several months ago when they participated in the Late Night Jazz series at the Royal Albert Hall. They performed an a cappella first set before being joined by a full ensemble for a moving tribute to Nina Simone.
Founded by Musical Director Carol Pemberton MBE in 1987, Black Voices are proud champions of the Black oral tradition. Their mission is to honour, celebrate, and cultivate this art form. Not only have they performed all over the world, this all-female, all-Black a cappella collective have opened for the likes of Ray Charles and Nina Simone.
This December, they will be paying tribute to another musical legend: the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. The thought of these iconic songs rendered a cappella by these incredibly skilled vocalists is very exciting.
You can buy tickets to see Black Voices Quintet Presents: Aretha’s Anthems at the Jazz Cafe on 29th December 2018 here.
