Incognito at Ronnie Scott’s (Review)

‘…A lively cocktail of jazz-inflected soul and funk replete with improvised instrumentals.’

Approaching their fortieth anniversary, acid-jazz group Incognito have a remarkably consistent discography. Under the leadership of Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick, the group, despite multiple changes in its roster, has maintained its proclivity for a hypnotic groove.

However, Incognito are a group best experienced live. Their most recent residency at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club has opened the New Year. All sold out, unsurprisingly. As expected, the musicians were on top form, providing a lively cocktail of jazz-inflected soul and funk replete with improvised instrumentals.

The ensemble was armed with three terrific female vocalists, harmonising beautifully throughout. Imaani, who opened the 2018 EFG London Jazz Festival at the 606, has a grainy texture to her voice. Smooth with a husky lining, she finessed ‘Silence of My Mind’ from Incognito’s 2008 album Tales of the BeachJoy Rose, bright and bell-like in tone, coloured songs such as ‘I Love What You Do For Me’ with her high scats.

And finally the enigmatic Vanessa Haynes, dubbed the ‘Caribbean Queen of Soul’ by Bluey. She took the lead on a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s epic ‘As’, a regular cover in Incognito’s live sets. It was a frenetic and vibrant performance, with Francisco Sales on guitar playing with particular flair. Haynes whipped out her elastic range, combining the sting of Chaka Khan with the resonance of Aretha.
