On 29th March, soul singer and theatre star Shaun Escoffery will be performing his first headline show in two years. The venue? Subterania – a live music space in West London which has hosted musical legends such as Roy Ayers and Jimmy Cliff.
Escoffery’s first release was the vibe-laden ‘Space Rider’, released by Oyster Music in 2001 and championed by radio DJ Trevor Nelson. Having established himself on the soul/R&B scene, Escoffery eventually navigated into theatre, winning an Olivier Award-nomination for his role in Parade. He also had a long and successful stint playing Mufasa in the hugely successful West End production of The Lion King.
His 2014 album Move Into Soul demonstrated his prowess as an interpreter with fresh, modern, and gorgeously-sung takes on soul classics such as Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ and Gladys Knight’s ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’.
The House That Soul Built recently reviewed Mr Escoffery at the Royal Festival Hall, performing Troy Miller’s rearrangements of Gershwin backed by the wonderful Philharmonia Orchestra. In addition to his bedazzled bow tie, Escoffery shone for his vocal finesse and phrasing.
