On 19th May, actor and singer Marisha Wallace will be performing a solo concert in the main theatre of The Other Palace, Victoria. Produced by Lambert Jackson Productions, this intimate concert will showcase one of the most exciting soulful voices to have emerged in recent years.
Wallace tackled the iconic role of Effie White in Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre for over two years, lifting audience members to their feet in the middle of the show with her performance of that song. She also starred in a ‘one-night-only’ production of The Color Purple at Cadogan Hall in summer 2017, and is currently starring as Becky in the musical Waitress.
Wallace – like her Color Purple co-star Rachel John – is a vocalist who could thrive in the likes of Ronnie Scott’s and Hideaway on the virtue of vocal prowess alone. With a voice packed with different colours and tones – capable of tenderness and pure grit – Wallace has often spoken fondly about her gospel upbringing. Her debut album Soul Holiday showcased a jazz sensibility to her vocal too. In fact, she will be performing at the Love Supreme Jazz Festival this summer. Promising an infusion of ‘jazz, gospel and R&B styles with a healthy dose of soul music‘, Wallace is likely to impress with her own curated set. Listen to her wonderful reading of ‘Natural Woman’ below.
