‘She’s Got Something About Her’ – Danny Toeman (Review)

Toeman’s raw vocals shine on this slice of romantic soul

Danny Toeman – King of North London Soul – can spit fire during a live set. His two sold-out concerts at Pizza Express Live this year are a testament to that.

Fortunately, he translates just as well on record. Compared to his last release, resilience anthem ‘Rise Above’, Toeman’s latest single ‘She’s Got Something About Her’ strikes a change in tone. Against a swooning mid-tempo arrangement – carrying the hallmarks of Motown romanticism and his southern soul influences – Toeman sings of his magnetic attraction to an enigmatic woman. Ultimately, ‘she’s got something about her.’

In his interview with The House That Soul Built a few months ago, Toeman reflected on the song and its intentional ambiguity: ‘I hope anyone can relate to it. What I love about a person… I can’t tell you why! It’s like soul music… I can study it all I want but I can never click what the magic is.’

Toeman’s gruff voice powers through, with his falsetto smoothing the edges.
