RuthAnne – ‘Take What I Can Get’ (Review)

Hailing from Donaghmead, Ireland, RuthAnne began her music career writing songs for the likes of Britney Spears, Bebe Rexha, and JoJo. She co-wrote JoJo’s pop/R&B hit ‘Too Little Too Late’ with songwriting virtuoso Billy Steinberg, reaching #3 in the Billboard Top 100 and #4 in the UK singles chart.

With influences spanning R&B and neo-soul, 1970s singer-songwriters, and soft rock, RuthAnne has spent the past few years working on her singing career. Matters of the Heart marks RuthAnne’s solo debut, the highlight of which is the lead single ‘Take What I Can Get’.

Co-written by RuthAnne, Rowe Composer, and Jez Ashurst, ‘Take What I Can Get’ could easily unite fans of contemporary R&B with those nostalgic for a classic soul melody. RuthAnne has even described the song herself as ‘Burt Bacharachy‘, which feels apt given its smoky arrangement.

With husky, expressive vocals (packing quite a punch by the song’s climax), RuthAnne sings of the difficulties of navigating from a romantic relationship to a platonic one, particularly when (unrequited) feelings still linger. She questions whether this kind of transition is even possible, and harbours hope for the day ‘that you gonna give it all to me.’ In the meantime, she will take what she can get.
