Anna Aarons – ‘Words’ (Review)

Author: No Comments Share:

A London-based singer-songwriter, Anna Aarons released her first single ‘Life’ last year. Having spent time touring across London’s live music scene and writing new material, she now returns with her second single – ‘Words’. Contrasted against the dreamy balladry of ‘Life’, Aarons digs into her pain and angst in her follow-up.

She explains: ‘”Words” is about my experience as a victim of verbal abuse. Many people suffer the same, sometimes without knowing. A narcissist will manipulate a situation and try to make you think you’re the one in the wrong. It’s a deep subject but I’ve taken the situation, made her words into lyrics and put a groove to it, to make a difficult experience into a song that is liberating for me and the listener.’

She wraps jazz and funk touches around an inescapably catchy pop melody. But beneath the groove lies a biting resentment towards a pernicious individual in Aarons’ life. She keeps the identity anonymous, but their impact is certain. ‘You left a wound on me / And on all the family / With those words / Those thieving words’.

Anna Aarons was profiled in The House That Soul Built last year. The House That Soul Built is supporting Anna in getting her music heard.
