Brace yourselves for a Soul Explosion at the Barbican this April as three key figures within 1980s/90s soul take to the stage. Brenda Russell, Angela Winbush, and Regina Belle will each perform a solo set in a one-night-only event produced by Soul Motion. Read a quick bio of each vocalist below and buy tickets here!
Brenda Russell
Best known for her hit song ‘Piano in the Dark’, Brenda Russell has enjoyed a fruitful career as a singer, songwriter, and producer – working with the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire, Patrice Rushen, and Donna Summer. She also co-wrote the score for the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple – including the empowering anthem ‘I’m Here’.
Angela Winbush
A protege of Stevie Wonder, Angela Winbush rose to prominence as a recording artist and producer alongside Rene Moore. The duo produced and wrote material for Janet Jackson and Stephanie Mills, including Mills’ US R&B #1 hit ‘I’ve Learned To Respect the Power of Love’. Winbush’s work with The Isley Brothers paved the way for a solo career, resulting in three studio albums.
Regina Belle
Emerging in the 1980s, Regina Belle had US R&B #1 hits with ‘Baby Come To Me’ and ‘Make It Like It Was’. She later topped the Billboard Top 100 in 1992 with the Grammy Award-winning ‘A Whole New World’ – a duet with Paebo Bryson for Disney’s Aladdin. She sings with glorious, full-bodied vocals.
