Evie Asio – ‘Available’ (Review)

Hailing from South-East London, alt-soul singer-songwriter Evie Asio will be releasing her debut album Contending and Contention this year. Asio’s latest single – chosen by the wonderful China Moses as her ‘late night track of the week‘ on her Jazz FM radio show – is an acoustic rendition of her song ‘Available’.

“The subject of Available is very different to every other song I’ve written,’ says Asio. ‘It was a poet at an open mic that made me want to reflect on my own feelings about social injustice; however, I love how the song also tells a wider story about the difficulties of reflecting on our own shortcomings.”

Stripping away the electronic textures of the original cut in favour of just piano and vocals, Asio’s acoustic performance sharpens the emotional intensity of the lyric. ‘Is my love affordable for you? Is my love available to you? Or am I just another folded page in the chapter of your play?’ she sings, her voice often dropping to deep trembles. A still, brooding, and captivating performance.
