You would forgiven for thinking that Acantha Lang’s newest release, ‘Whatever Happened To our Love’, was a cover of an underappreciated ’60s soul ‘deep cut.’ But the song is another impressive original from the bluesy-voiced singer, originally from New Orleans, who is now three for three following the aggressive ‘He Said She Said’ and the poignant ‘Lois Lang.’
There is a subdued funk to ‘Whatever Happened To Your Love’, driven by Emlyn Francis’ jittery guitar work. Lang sits herself comfortably in the groove, delivering the tune with a vulnerability and balance reminiscent of Bettye Swan. The brass and backing vocals are layered on beautifully.
Lang wrote the song in New York City with Grammy Award winning producer, Jimmy Bralower in his basement studio a few years back. She recalls: “My relationship at the time was falling apart, and I was trying to find a job, so I was having a bit of a rough time. Jimmy called me that day to come to the studio and ‘Whatever Happened To Our Love?’ was born. Originally the song had a slower, more melancholy vibe, but after a period of reflection, I had no regrets on how things turned out. I did a little re-write on the lyrics and the song naturally evolved into this new and funky version. Time is a great teacher and it taught me that sometimes breaking up with someone can be a blessing in disguise so I decided to give the track some positive energy.”
