Alex Webb – British Standard Time (Review)

Author: No Comments Share:

Songwriter and pianist Alex Webb provides a charming collection of jazz reinventions and new readings of jazz classics in his collaborative album British Standard Time. The achingly soulful Tony Momrelle performs lead vocals on opening track ‘Give Me the Night’, a slowed-down, 1950s jazz reading of the George Benson classic which still captures the excitement of the original. Webb’s take on U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ is the most radical interpretation and surprisingly effective, aided by Jo Harrop’s mellow tonality. Luca Manning also shines on a cover of Rag’n’Bone Man’s ‘Human’. The standards on the album are also carefully arranged and skilfully delivered. A particular highlight: the Queen of Lovers Rock Carroll Thompson lends her sweetly-seductive vocals to a cover of Dinah Washington’s ‘Mad About the Boy’
