Here’s our latest round-up of March-April releases, with new music from Acantha Lang, Danny Toeman, Quinn Oulton feat. Moses Boyd, and Jennifer Holliday!

Acantha Lang – ‘River Keep Runnin”

THTSB favourite Acantha Lang balances strife and challenge with steadfast resilience in ‘River Keep Runnin”. She explains: ‘[River Keep Runnin’] was inspired by my mother’s displacement from both Hurricane Betsy and Hurricane Katrina. I wrote the song as a literal depiction of the flooding that has brought so much devastation to New Orleans — my hometown — but it’s also a metaphor for life’s troubles that can bring you down.’ After a slow, brooding intro, ‘River Keep Runnin” picks up the pace with Lang’s blues-soaked voice at the fore.

Danny Toeman – ‘Shake the Blues’

Harking back to some of his seminal influences (think: James Brown), Danny Toeman delivers unmistakably gruff vocals above a tight rhythm section on throwback tune ‘Shake the Blues’. Brimming with charisma and energy, Toeman drives the track to a wailing finish.

Quinn Oulton feat. Moses Boyd – ‘Clashing Colours’

South London based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist & producer Quinn Oulton joins forces with award-winning jazz drummer Moses Boyd on ‘Clashing Colours’, an intricately produced, atmospheric track blending Boyd’s sensitive touches with Oulton’s saxophony and layered harmonies.

Jennifer Holliday – ‘So In Love’

Immortalised in music history for originating the role of Effie White in Broadway musical Dreamgirls, Jennifer Holliday has at times been overlooked for her contributions as a studio artist. Her latest release, ‘So In Love’ (which she co-wrote), is a traditional soul/R&B ballad with dulcet backing vocals. Holliday’s voice is delicate at first but she is given the space to soar.
