Though primarily a classical concert series, the BBC Proms has often catered to fans of soul, jazz, and blues. We’re still reeling from their 2019 tribute to Nina Simone, featuring vocalists Ledisi and Lisa Fischer, and Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest. Prom 4: Cynthia Erivo – Legendary Voices, 17 July 2022
Cynthia Erivo‘s star turn as Celie in Broadway’s The Color Purple won her a Tony Award and catapulted her to stardom. She has since featured in several feature films – earning an Academy Award-nomination for her performance as Harriet Tubman in Harriet – and ventured into a studio recording career. She makes her Proms debut honouring some of the iconic vocalists who inspired her. Expect renditions of classic songs by Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and Etta James.
Prom 47: Aretha Franklin – Queen of Soul, 22nd August 2022
The late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will be honoured by the vocalist Sheléa, a protégée of Quincy Jones with impressive vocal powers. Sheléa will be supported by Jules Buckley and the Jules Buckley Orchestra. Check out her Aretha Franklin tribute below for a flavour of what you can expect.
Prom 56: The South African Jazz Songbook, 28th August
South African Music Award-winner Marcus Wyatt leads the Metropole Orkest in a celebration of South African jazz, joined by vocalists Siyabonga Mthembu and ESKA, saxophonist Soweto Kinch, and tuba player Theon Cross. Expect to hear the music of Hugh Masekela, Cry Freedom’s Jonas Gwangwa, composer Abdullah Ibrahim, the Blue Notes’ Dudu Pukwana and Johnny Dyani, and saxophonist Winston Mankunku.
