Jalen N’Gonda – ‘Just Like You Used To’ (Review)

In a partnership as logical (and enjoyable) as bread and butter, Daptone Records has added London-based musician Jalen N’Gonda to its roster. Raised just outside of Washington D.C, N’Gonda – whose father hails from Lusaka, Zambia – relocated to to the UK to study at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts. In addition to supporting stints for Martha Reeves, Lauryn Hill, and Laura Mvula, N’Gonda has been honing his craft in both Liverpool and London’s live music scenes. He released his debut EP Talking About Mary back in 2018, underscoring the rich diet of Motown and soul music on which he was raised.

A worthy single to inaugurate N’Gonda’s tenure with Daptone, ‘Just Like You Used To’ is a forlorn mid-tempo which places N’Gonda’s buttery falsetto vocals front-and-centre.
