Having already enjoyed a rapturous British reception at the BBC Proms earlier this year, Cory Henry was all-guns blazing at this sold out concert at HERE at Outernet, one of central London’s newest venues. Clearly hyped for his European tour, the organ child prodigy turned Snarky Puppy member turned Grammy-nominated soloist exhausted the venue’s curfew to its final minutes. His set ably canvassed a range of sounds from the psychedelic instrumental take on Stevie Wonder’s ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, the electronic, synthy ‘Waterfall’ from 2021’s Best of Me, and the stomping gospel of ‘Rise’ from 2020’s Something to Say (a terrific encore choice). There was certainly a fallow period in the 2-hour workout where one felt slightly battered by the overamplified sound – a shame also that there were no acoustic, piano-driven numbers in the vein of his recent album Live at the Piano – though the judicious encore choices saw the evening end on a strong note. Augmenting Henry’s gritty, squalling vocals were a small but mighty band with exceptional backing singers.
