As Norah Jones went through customs at Heathrow airport, an official insisted she perform ‘Chasing Pirates’ at her upcoming Royal Festival Hall concert. She honoured their wishes and did the same for a few other ad hoc requests on the night, shouted across the sold-out auditorium. Performing with a 3-piece band in a gorgeously lit set-up, Jones’ stage persona matched the breezy cool of her voice. She didn’t break a sweat switching between piano, keyboard, acoustic and electric guitars. At times when the ballad-heavy set flirted on the sleepy side, Jones injected some welcome bite and verve with material such as poppy break-up tune ‘Happy Pills’, ‘Don’t Know What It Means’ (a country rock song from Jones’ band Puss n Boots), and ‘Flame Twin’, coloured with flecks of guitar scuzz. Tracks from her debut Come Away With Me (2002) – the title track, debut single ‘Don’t Know Why’, ‘Turn Me On’ – were met with audience applause from the opening chords. Over twenty years later, Jones still nestles in these song’s subtle, intimate grooves with understated ease.
