It is always refreshing to hear a contemporary soul band channel the sounds of the past with effortless authenticity. Dallas-based soul outfit Bastards of Soul have evolved from a rough-and-ready bar band to a more polished act performing their original material.
Drawing upon the traditions of southern soul – think Otis Redding, Muscle Shoals, Wilson Pickett – BoS unveiled their debut album Spinnin‘ this February, released via Eastwood Records. A venture by radio personality Jeff Wade and Luke Sardello, co-owner of the adored vinyl record store Josey Records, Eastwood will release all of its material on vinyl, in keeping with Sardello’s belief in the importance of the physical experience of listening to records.
BoS’ debut single ‘The Waiting Time’, like the rest of the album, is certainly a song fit for vinyl. The band provide sweet, gentle accompaniment, contrasting against front-man Chadwick Murray’s ragged vocal.
