Funk, jazz, soul composer Roy Ayers is performing at Subterania, West London this November.
Known as ‘The Godfather of Neo-Soul’, Ayers is a prolific vibraphonist, producer, and composer with an active career since the 1960s. Born in Los Angeles, Ayers began his musical journey by playing boogie woogie tunes on the piano at age five. At age nine, he turned to the steel guitar, picking up the flute, trumpet, and drums during his teenage years before finding the vibraphone as his central instrument.
His immense career is littered with milestones. In 1973, he scored the soundtrack to the Blaxploitation film Coffy, starring Pam Grier. In the late 1970s, he toured Nigeria with Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He continued to produce, record, and tour around the world throughout the 1980s/90s, influencing the likes of Erykah Badu and Pharrell Williams with his jazz-funk vibes.
