Alexander O’Neal at The Boisdale (Review)

In a word: lethargic.

The opinions of this writer are certainly at odds with the audience at The Boisdale last night – most of whom, after digesting their sophisticated supper, danced their way towards the stage for Alexander O’Neal’s finale of ‘Criticize’ and ‘Fake’.

And I’m sure after a few glasses of white wine and a few courses of The Boisdale’s scrumptious-looking cuisine (I’m yet to try), some 1980s R&B nostalgia would have been quite welcome.

However, as striking as The Boisdale is with its tartan carpet, dimmed lighting, and vibrant red walls, last night’s event did not work for this writer. Maybe it was the design and intimacy of the venue – better suited for subtle jazz and soul rather Mr O’Neal’s brand of boogie R&B. However, the issue mostly lies with the protagonist of the evening – however charming he might be.

Mr O’Neal delivered a truncated version of the same set (shtick and all) which he delivered at The London Palladium a few months ago. Visibly quite exhausted (though competent) during his two-hour set at London’s biggest theatre, one would have assumed a more intimate venue like The Boisdale would be better suited. Alas, there was an air of ennui weighing down Mr O’Neal’s performances. Only the ballads ‘Sunshine’ (from sophomore album Hearsay, 1987) and ‘If You Were Here Tonight’ (from his debut eponymous album, 1985) were convincingly well-sung. For the uptempo numbers, an out of breath Mr O’Neal was buoyed by a terrific band. The setlist stuck to the ‘greatest hits’ from his first three albums : (What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me’, ‘What’s Missing’, ‘Hearsay’, ‘Never Knew Love Like This’, ‘Saturday Love’ (a duet with label mate Cherelle), etc.

Like at the Palladium, Mr O’Neal’s backing vocalists took over briefly. While they had a three-song interlude at the Palladium, last night they were saddled only with Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘September’. A pandering choice coupled with pandering audience participation left these three talented vocalists under-utilised.

The reviewed concert took place on 17th October 2018 at The Boisdale, Canary Wharf. You can find details about other Boisdale events here
