The previous release by Gideon King and City Blog, ‘Audience of One’, was a strikingly ‘introspective meditation on loneliness’. The same confessional storytelling is applied to the jazz collective’s most recent release ‘Burning Through’ –Â a story of a relationship exhausted by duplicity, infidelity, and secrets on both sides.
The lyric in the chorus – ‘Tell me this is over or I’ll kill myself‘ – jars with the elegant flow of the melody. But it nonetheless captures the sorry state of a relationship irreparably stained but desperately kept alive. Alita Moses delivers vocals on the track and courses along the arrangement gracefully.
The video, embedded below, intersperses scenes in the studio with Moses walking through a wintry landscape.
Founder and guitarist Gideon King spoke to The House That Soul Built about the meaning of the song: “Burning Through is about the frenzied futility of trying to keep secrets. It’s also about directionless passion. I tried to transmit desperation through the lyrics. What can I say it’s not uplifting shit. The video ain’t anything too deep. Just an extension of the scattered meanings in the tune.”Â
The single is officially released 20th September
