It can be difficult to craft an inspirational lyric which doesn’t descent into schmaltz. Neo-soul artist Arieleno hits the winning formula with his latest single ‘At Night (Zumbé)’, which he describes as ‘a positive & inspirational song inspired by our mother’s prayers, uplifting us to have faith & belief that better days will come.‘ The song honours the ride-or-die individuals in one’s life. ‘If I woke up to a better day, I know there’s something good in every day. Yes it’s you,’ he sings.
The song is beautifully arranged and produced. Beginning with poppy guitar, Arieleno’s soulful vocals command the listener’s attention. Throughout, he flexes his dexterous instrument, gliding into falsetto at ease. He knows when to caress the lyric and when to tap into his range. Backing vocals creep into the mix, pacing the tune gently towards a gospel climax.
Hailing from South-East London, Arieleno won the 2013 MOBO Unsung Award as part of R&B duo In’Sight. His career has spanned opening for the likes of Boyz II Men and Brandy, singing backing vocals for X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, and touring with DJ/producer Sigala. He is currently a student at Tileyard Education, working towards an MA in Music Business.
