We the Commas – comprised of brothers Cam (17), Jordy (19) and Lenny Comma (23) – describe their musical style as ‘surf alternative R&B’. Based out of San Diego, the Commas brothers are avid surfers which, as Black men, singles them out from most people where they live. Musically, the group blend the ‘sounds of the surf’ with the various permutations of Black music they grew up with. Lenny explains, “I think we’re different because we are bringing in elements from 50’s pop, R&B and classic jazz which is a combination we don’t see much in today’s mainstream music.”
Indeed, their latest single ‘Custom Made’ is Smokey Robinson meets The Beach Boys. The woozy instrumentals which begin the track conjure thoughts of a tranquil day at the beach. Settling into a gentle groove, the brothers croon their way through this puppy love ditty with lyrics and a timeless melody that could have originated from a 1950s doo-wop group. The brothers bring a real soulfulness to their delivery, particularly Cam as he flexes his throwback falsetto. Their jazz influence shines through with a trumpet solo.
We The Commas explain, “The idea for ‘Custom Made’ came completely spontaneously and it was one of those songs that practically birthed itself. This track is a deeper dive into our sound and really gives a feel for who ‘We the Commas’ are.”
