Bosley – ‘Are We Giving Up?’ (Review)

Bosley is the stage name of American singer-songwriter Thomas Humphrey Mayer Jr. His career to date has involved touring with various outfits, recording three studio albums, and securing publishing deals with Netflix and HBO. His sophomore album The Dirty Dogs Radio Show (2015) dealt with his decade-long struggle with alcohol and drug addiction.

I just dropped the song of the summer,’ he says somewhat haughtily about his latest song ‘Are We Giving Up?’ I would probably award that accolade to Lianne La Havas’ ‘Read My Mind’, but Bosley’s tune would sit comfortably on any soulful summer playlists. The opening horns – which recall the intro to Shakira’s ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ no? – pave the way to a mellow, toe-tapping groove with a tight drum/bass arrangement. That brassy chorus is right on the money.

Bosley says: “The song started with a beat and a bassline. I followed the rhythm of the chorus I was hearing and the words came to me from there. I made a half minute demo of the hook with the harmonies and it immediately felt like a smash. Even just that 30 second demo was so catchy, I listened to it on repeat in my car for a month straight. The song went through several demo versions, and I eventually took it to Philadelphia Producers Rick Friedrich (The Roots) and Chuck Treece (Bad Brains, Mc Rad). After 10 minutes in the studio with them, the song transformed and we all knew we had a hit.”
