The Daptone Super Soul Revue Live at the Apollo (Review)

Celebrating two decades at the forefront of contemporary soul, Daptone Records mark their 20th anniversary with a live album recorded at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Recorded over three nights in 2014, The Daptone Super Soul Revue brings together artists from across the label’s impressive roster: Saun & Starr, Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens, Antibalas, The Budos Band, Menahan Street Band, Sugarman 3, the Como Mama, and, of course, Charles Bradley and the Extraordinaires and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. The release serves not only to celebrate Daptone’s rich output, but to memorialise the talented artists (Bradley, Jones, and Shelton) who are no sadly longer with us. The revue is a relentless soulful workout with the label’s characteristic blend of blasting horns, funky interludes, and roof-raising vocal talent. Highlights of the six-side affair include Saun & Starr’s bewitching ‘In the Night’ and Charles Bradley and the Extraordinaire’s soul-baring ‘Lovin’ You Baby’. But it is Sharon Jones who steals the show, bringing a frenzied energy as she ad-libs through ‘Get Up and Get Out’ and extolls her African roots with a cover of James Brown’s ‘There Was a Time’.
