Gizelle Smith – ‘Agony Road’ (Review)

Author: No Comments Share:

Recording her first album with funk collective The Mighty Mocambos, Mancunian singer Gizelle Smith has toured over Europe with her brand of energetic funk. Conceived during a trip to New York, ‘Agony Road’ is the lead single from Smith’s third studio album, Revealing (2021). A funk stomper etched with rock stylings, the tune was written in response to the passing of her father Joe, a former guitarist and musical director for The Four Tops. Smith sings of jolting herself out of the numbness she feels while grieving. Her voice is filled with anguish as she deftly navigates the pulsating arrangement.
