Thee Sacred Souls – ‘Easier Said Than Done’ / ‘Overflowing’ (Review)

San Diego-based outfit Thee Sacred Souls impressed this writer with their debut ‘Can I Call You Rose‘ a few years ago. They bring the same laidback energy and gentle soulfulness to recent singles ‘Easier Said Than Done’ and ‘Overflowing’. “She said, ‘Be honest with how you feel’ / I said, ‘That’s easier said than done,'” narrates lead singer Josh Lane on ‘Easier Said Than Done’, a guitar-strumming mediation on the day-to-day challenges navigating romantic openness and honesty. The backing vocals begin airy and slight but grow in power, driving home the optimistic conclusion that “true love is worth it in the end. More consciously throwback, ‘Overflowing’ is the kind of sweetened R&B vehicle you would expect to hear on a Drifters or Temptations record. Lane’s falsetto vocal here captures the longing of unrequited love. Wonderful soul balladry.
