French-Caribbean singer, songwriter, and kickass bassist Adi Oasis (formerly Adeline) continues an impressive streak of albums with third release Lotus Glow. Though guilty of being slightly overlong, Lotus Glow is a summery haze of swampy funk grooves, sinewy vocals, and prodding bass. Here, Adi pays homage to the women who inspired her: Serena Williams in ‘Serena’ and her grandmother in ‘Sidonie’, the latter with lovely Philly soul horns. Her strongest melody is self-encouragement anthem ‘Get It Got It’, while tunes such as ‘Multiply’ and ‘U Make Me Want It’ take the album to heights of unfettered sexiness. But her songwriting veers into more serious, politically-conscious territory too. On ‘Marigold’, featuring musician J. Hoard, Adi lists the social stigmas and prejudices that tend to hold back (Black) women like herself. She calmly seethes over mass-shootings in ‘Dumpalltheguns’. Stealthily produced throughout by Adi and her partner Morgan Wiley as the duo Nightshade, Lotus Glow cements Adi’s status as a champion of contemporary funk and soul. One can imagine it will go down a storm live.
