Raised in Douala, Cameroon by musical parents, Irma Pany moved with her siblings to Paris to pursue an education. She would soon become one of France’s YouTube sensations after her acoustic covers on the platform landed her a record deal with crowdfunding independent label MyMajorCompany.
Her latest single Venom of Angels is a celebration of female desire and pleasure, which Irma contends is “..pretty often ignored and unknown”. The song begins with soft touches of acoustic guitar, with light drum programming and 1960s girl group backing vocals entering the mix to create an ethereal soundscape. It is a confident blend of ‘old school’ and contemporary flavour.
Irma basks in the steamy intimacy of the lyrics. ‘It smells like the dawn, the dawn of us / Around me,’ she sings. Her delivery is measured and soothing, with occasional forays into her upper range. Her vibrato crackles gently at the end of her phrases.
